in Action |

At
Swansfield Elementary School, we believe that one size does
not fit all. Students
are taught our strong core academic curriculum with
additional instruction by specialists in art, music,
physical education, and media. Extra help and extra
challenges are available to all children who need them,
pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.
The
staff at Swansfield works with all students to meet the
needs of each and every
individual child. Swansfield teachers consistently set high
expectations. As a result, students consistently work hard
to achieve and then exceed those challenging objectives. It
is our goal that every student plan and strive to attend
college when they become adults. It is never too early to
plan when Excellence Starts Here at Swansfield.
Our staff
is highly qualified and highly
motivated. Seventy-five percent of our
classroom teachers have a master’s degree or
higher, with another 7 percent currently earning their
master’s degree. The average teacher has been at
Swansfield for 12 years, with a healthy mix of young new
talent and seasoned professionals leading the way.

| Standards
for Success |
|
Beginning
with full-day kindergarten, children are exposed to the joy
of reading, the thrill of seeing their thoughts transformed
into written work, and the hands-on application of both
scientific and math concepts.
In first
and second grades, the average class size is 19. This low
ratio allows our highly qualified staff to work with our
youngest readers in small groups targeted at every level of
experience.
In the
intermediate grades, the average class size is 23. This
allows individualized instruction,
small-group instruction, as well as whole class instruction
with a great deal of
success.
Specialists
in reading, math, English as a second language, school
psychology, technology,
gifted and talented, enrichment, speech therapy, and special
education are available to support and enhance the work of
the classroom teacher.
Additionally,
each grade has at least one instructional assistant to work
with students, handle administrative functions of the team,
and ensure the smooth operation of each grade.
School
begins at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 3:15 p.m.
Bus service
is provided for students who live more than 1 mile away from
Swansfield. Students
who live closer are encouraged to walk, bike, or scooter to
school, or they may be dropped off by car.

| Celebrating
Success |
|
Swansfield
has exceeded the state standards in reading and math on the
Maryland State Assessment (MSA) for the 2005 school year.
As well, Swansfield met the even higher standards set
by the county with 75.7% of our third, fourth, and fifth
graders in the Advanced or Proficient range in mathematics
on the 2005 MSA. In reading, 83.7% of our students scored in
the Advanced or Proficient range.
Swansfield
meets all standards established by No Child Left Behind both
in terms of staffing as well as continued growth in academic
achievement through assessment testing.
Two years ago, Swansfield was removed from school
choice for both continued improvement over a three-year
period and exceeding the goals of adequate yearly progress.
In a school
climate survey, parents, staff, and students rated
Swansfield quite highly with an average score of 3.7 out of
4.0.

| An
Excellent Starting Point |
|
Swansfield
is a multicultural school where different traditions,
cultures and beliefs are respected and celebrated. Our
school is dedicated
to providing a safe, secure and stimulating learning
environment.
We strongly
believe that education begins at home with parents being a
child’s first and most important teachers. By working
closely with families at Swansfield, we are building a
strong partnership to benefit all children. We welcome new
families to play an active role in our community and
educational programs.
Families at
Swansfield are an active, integral and critical part of the
educational program. Through
classroom volunteers to the PTA, to support in the home,
families lead the way to success in the Swansfield
community.
We invite you to visit our school and see for yourself why
it such a source of pride in our community.
